I am: messy, joyful, angry, anxious, sad, scared, a painter, a ceramicist, a lesbian, playful, dead-serious, a hillbilly, obsessive, sick, scared, a collector, a lifelong student, a sometimes-educator, a reader, a witch, a crocheter, a poet (and I know it), extremely intentional, celebratory, beautiful, enthusiastic, worn-out, indecisive, and all-around a cool fucking lady. My work is: most of the above. The meeting of a variety of factors and facets filtering down into a great Something. Me trying to tell you a story. Colorful. Textured. Highly autobiographical and concerned with issues of feminism and womanhood, lesbian identity and experiences, and Appalachian culture and roots. Colorful. Textured. A celebration, an act of worship, a scream, a song, a poem. Words and Ideas: failure, horror, beauty, magic, queerness, womanhood, brushstrokes, mythology and spirituality, mythmaking, storytelling, brushstrokes, unfinished, wrongness, crookedness, yuckiness, glitter, cheapness, the low-brow, yonic, materiality, sloppiness. Influenced by: a variety of artists contemporary and not-so-much, including but not limited to: Rebecca Morgan, Sydnie Jimenez, Devan Shimoyama, Klara Kristlova, Aleksandra Waliszewska, Naudline Pierre, John Powell Jones, my mom, Yayoi Kusama, and Frida Kahlo. The tireless work of feminist, LGBT, and Appalachian artists throughout history. “Sloppy craft” ideals. Horror films, music, Dolly Parton, literature and mythology, feminist and LGBT activism, Appalachian culture and history, Karyn Kusama’s 2009 cult classic Jennifer’s Body, my own damn life and the lives of those around me
